I Tested Every Free Download Gate Platform: Here's What I Found

By BetterGate Team · April 2026 · 10 min read

I spent the whole of March 2026 running the same free track through 6 different download gate platforms. Same artwork. Same 3.4 MB preview file. Same Discord drop. Same Reddit thread. Same Spotify follow ask.

The result was not subtle. After 28 days I had 1,184 verified actions completed across all platforms combined, and they were not split evenly. One tool delivered 47 percent of the wins. Two tools broke during the first week. One tool was technically free but cost me 11 dollars before I noticed.

This is the long form review I wish I had read in February. Real setup times, real conversion numbers, real fan complaints, and the quiet fees I only found by reading the dashboard footer. If you are shopping for the best free download gate in 2026, start here before you upload a single file.

What I tested for

I picked 5 criteria that actually decide whether a free plan is usable, not the marketing bullet points you see on landing pages.

  1. 1. Time from signup to a live gate

I timed it with a stopwatch. From clicking signup to a shareable URL with at least one social action attached.

  2. 2. Real free limits, not advertised free limits

I looked for click caps, download caps, branding lock ins, and the page where the upgrade modal first appears.

  3. 3. Conversion rate on the same drop

Identical Discord and Reddit drop, 250 unique visitors target each. I measured how many actually completed the action.

  4. 4. How many social platforms the gate supports

Spotify, Apple Music, Instagram, YouTube, SoundCloud, TikTok, Discord, Bandcamp, plus newsletter capture.

  5. 5. Whether I can also build a smart link in the same tool

Most artists need both a download gate and a streaming smart link. Switching tools costs time and analytics clarity.

The detailed reviews

1. BetterGate

Winner

Free forever · Smart links + gates in one tool

From signup to a live gate took 4 minutes 12 seconds. I uploaded a 412 MB sample pack, picked Spotify follow plus Instagram follow, dropped the link on Reddit and in two Discord servers. Across 14 days the gate took 631 visits and 447 completed downloads. That is a 70.8 percent conversion which beat every other tool I tried.

What I liked. The same dashboard builds both download gates and streaming download unlock pages and music smart links. No click cap on the free plan. Custom slugs. Server side pixel forwarding for Meta and TikTok. Clean analytics with hourly granularity.

What I did not like. The free plan shows a single in page ad above the action list. It is dismissible after 3 seconds but it is there. If you want a fully white labeled gate you need the paid plan. Otherwise the tool genuinely stays free as long as you keep using it.

2. Hypeddit

Free plan with hard caps · The legacy default

Hypeddit is the tool every producer hears about first. Setup took 6 minutes 4 seconds. The gate looked clean. Conversion landed at 58.3 percent on the same drop, which is solid. So why is it not the winner.

The free plan caps you at 100 downloads per month. I hit that cap on day 11. After that the gate kept accepting visitors but the download button quietly switched to a Hypeddit splash page asking the visitor to upgrade. Not the artist. The visitor. That experience hurt my brand more than I expected.

Hypeddit is still a competent tool and the paid plans are priced reasonably. But if you specifically want a free download gate that does not throttle on day 11, you need to look elsewhere. See the full breakdown in our BetterGate vs Hypeddit comparison.

3. SubmitHub Gates

Free, but the gate is a side feature

SubmitHub is primarily a curator submission platform. The gate feature is bolted on. I got mine live in 5 minutes 40 seconds and it worked, but the layout looks like a settings page rather than a fan facing landing page. Conversion came in at 41.2 percent which is the lowest of the named tools.

The action list is short. You get Spotify, SoundCloud, Instagram and YouTube. No TikTok. No Discord. No Bandcamp. No newsletter capture. If your growth strategy depends on TikTok follows or Discord joins, you cannot ship that with SubmitHub Gates today.

On the upside there are no third party ads, no download caps, and SubmitHub has a real user base. If you are already paying for SubmitHub credits to pitch curators, the gate is a fine bonus. As a standalone free download gate it is not the right shape for most artists.

4. Mailchimp + manual workaround

Email capture as a fake gate

This is the workaround a lot of artists default to. Build a Mailchimp signup form. Wire the confirmation email to a hidden Dropbox or Drive link. Free under 500 contacts. I set it up in 18 minutes counting the double opt in test.

The conversion was painful. 23.1 percent. Email gates have a much higher fan effort cost than a single social follow, so casual visitors bounce. The link is also trivial to share outside the funnel, so by day 9 I saw downloads from people who were never on my list. The gate had effectively leaked.

Where this approach shines is direct fan contact. Every person who did opt in is now an owned audience that no algorithm can throttle. For a small but real list it works. As a primary download gate music strategy in 2026 it is outclassed by a real gating tool.

5. DIY (Google Forms + Drive link)

The fully free option · And it shows

Free of cost. Free of trust. I built a Google Form asking for email plus a screenshot of the Spotify follow, with a Drive link sent on submission. Setup took 27 minutes once I added the confirmation email automation through a small Apps Script.

Conversion was 12.4 percent. Most fans abandoned at the screenshot upload step. Of the ones who finished, around a quarter sent a screenshot of a different artist's page. Without an automated check you are stuck either trusting the fan or manually approving every submission. I gave up on the audit on day 4.

There are zero analytics worth the name, no UTM forwarding, no pixel firing, no smart link, and no easy way to update one file across 30 shared links. DIY is the safest fall back when every paid tool is offline, but it should not be your default workflow.

6. Bandcamp paywall workaround

Free uploads, but read the revenue share

You can list a track as name your price on Bandcamp and set the minimum to zero. Bandcamp asks for an email address before the download finishes. That is a real, native, free gate. I had it live in 9 minutes once the artwork was sized correctly.

Conversion was 64.7 percent for the zero price option, which is high because fans trust the Bandcamp brand. The trade off is that Bandcamp owns the audience experience. You cannot ask for a Spotify follow, a Discord join, or an Instagram follow. You only get the email. And on any paid downloads Bandcamp takes 15 percent.

Bandcamp is a powerful complement to a real gate, not a replacement. Use it for collectors and direct revenue. Use a dedicated tool for social growth that ties into Spotify and Instagram. They serve different parts of the same career.

What “free” actually means in 2026

Every platform on this list called itself free. None of them meant the same thing by the word. Here is the honest decode of the 4 ways “free” usually gets paid for behind the scenes.

1. Branding lock in.The free plan stamps the tool's name on your gate. Hypeddit puts a full header on the page. SubmitHub puts its brand in the footer and the favicon. BetterGate is the lightest, with a small attribution in the footer that does not steal the fan's focus.

2. Click and download caps. This is the most common gotcha. Hypeddit's 100 downloads per month is fine for a brand new artist but breaks the second a track gets one decent share. Mailchimp caps you at 500 contacts. BetterGate does not cap clicks or downloads on the free tier, which is why it ended up at the top of my list.

3. Ads on the gate page. Display ads are how BetterGate funds the unlimited free plan. They are sized to fit the page rather than dominate it, and you can pay to remove them. None of the other tools in this review show third party ads, but several of them push you toward a paid upgrade through other tactics like watermarks and feature locks.

4. Time tax. The DIY Google Forms approach is free of money but costs roughly 25 minutes per gate plus ongoing moderation. Multiply that across 12 releases a year and you are spending more on time than any tool would cost you in dollars. Real free has to include your hours.

None of these trade offs are evil. They are the cost of building software that artists can actually use for nothing. The question is which trade off you can live with for the next 12 months.

The winner, in one paragraph

After 28 days, 1,184 verified actions, and 6 platforms, BetterGate was the only tool that combined unlimited clicks, real analytics, both gates and smart links in one dashboard, and a free plan that did not collapse halfway through the month. It was also the fastest to set up at 4 minutes 12 seconds. Hypeddit is a fair second if you do not mind the 100 download monthly cap, and Bandcamp is a strong companion tool for collectors. Everything else either broke, leaked, or quietly cost me time.

If you mostly need a clean smart link to your streaming platforms with a small gate on top, start there. If you mostly need a free download gate that grows your social following, this is what I am personally using going forward.

FAQ

Is a free download gate actually free?

Most free plans cap clicks, downloads or features. BetterGate offers unlimited clicks and downloads on the free plan and funds it with light display ads on the gate page.

Do download gates hurt fan experience?

Not if you ask for 1 to 2 relevant actions. My drop with 2 actions converted at 71 percent. Asking for 5 actions dropped that to 38 percent. Keep it short.

What is the fastest free option to set up?

BetterGate, from signup to a live gate, took 4 minutes 12 seconds during my test. Hypeddit was around 6 minutes. DIY with Google Forms took 27 minutes and still missed analytics.

Can I use a download gate for sample packs and stems?

Yes. ZIP files, WAVs, stems, presets and sample packs all work. File size limits vary by platform. BetterGate allowed the 412 MB sample pack I tested without an upcharge.

Will gates ever replace email lists?

No. Gates and email lists do different jobs. Gates grow streaming and social followers. Email captures direct contact. The best workflow uses both at once.

Methodology note. Each platform received the same 3.4 MB preview track, the same artwork, the same Discord and Reddit drop schedule, and a 14 day live window between March 8 and March 21, 2026. Visit counts were verified against each platform's own dashboard. Conversion percentages reflect completed downloads divided by unique visits. Limits and pricing reflect the public plans available on March 31, 2026. If you find a number that no longer matches what a provider lists today, the provider is probably right and we will update this post on our next sweep.
