ToneDen Shut Down in 2024: Here's Exactly What to Use Instead
By BetterGate Team · February 2026 · 9 min read
If you ran a free download campaign, a Spotify pre-save, or a Facebook ad funnel anytime in the last decade, there is a good chance you ran it through ToneDen. For a lot of independent artists, DJs, and small labels, ToneDen was not just a tool. It was the place where the whole release plan lived: the smart link in the Instagram bio, the email gate behind the free remix, the pixel feeding retargeting audiences back into Meta.
Then in 2024 it quietly went away. Logins stopped working, smart links stopped resolving, support tickets stopped getting answered. If you are reading this, you are probably mid-release, you have ad spend already committed, and you just realised the link in your campaign is dead. That is a frustrating place to be, and we are not going to dance around it.
This guide is written for that exact moment. It explains what is publicly known about why ToneDen wound down, what features you lose, the four replacements worth your time, and a step-by-step migration plan you can run in an afternoon, including how to rebuild your Facebook pixel and conversion tracking so your next campaign actually optimises against real conversions instead of bouncing off a 404.
What happened to ToneDen
ToneDen launched in 2013 as a fan-engagement and ad-automation platform aimed at independent musicians, electronic producers, and small labels. Over the years it grew into a Swiss army knife of music marketing: smart links, download gates, pre-save campaigns, social actions, and a guided flow for spinning up Facebook and Instagram ad sets pointed at those links. At its peak it was running campaigns for a meaningful slice of the indie electronic scene.
In late 2023 the cracks started to show. Smart links began to render slowly, support response times stretched into weeks, and the public roadmap stopped updating. Through 2024 the platform was wound down in stages. Free accounts lost access first. Paid dashboards became read-only. Existing smart link URLs returned errors or simply stopped resolving. By the end of the year there was no working version of the product, no public migration tool, and no official replacement recommendation.
ToneDen never published a long farewell post explaining the why. What is publicly known is that the team had previously been acquired by Bandsintown in 2021, and that the standalone ToneDen product was deprecated as that integration matured. Beyond that, anything you read about the shutdown is speculation. What is not speculation is the practical impact on artists: thousands of live campaigns broke, retargeting pixels stopped firing on conversions, and historical analytics are no longer accessible inside the old dashboard.
If you are still on the "is this real?" step, it is. The product is gone, the URLs are not coming back, and the answer is to migrate, not wait.
What ToneDen artists are losing
Here are the five things people used ToneDen for most, and the cleanest free or paid replacement for each one.
- 1
Smart links to streaming platforms
What it did: One short URL that auto-routed listeners to Spotify, Apple Music, YouTube Music, and the rest of their preferred service.
Use instead: BetterGate Smart Links (free, auto-fetches every platform from one Spotify URL).
- 2
Download unlock gates
What it did: A page that required a follow, like, or email signup before the listener could download a free track, sample pack, or remix stem.
Use instead: BetterGate Download Unlock Gates (free, supports stacked actions and R2-backed file delivery).
- 3
Facebook Pixel and ad reporting
What it did: Per-link Facebook Pixel so you could retarget visitors who clicked a smart link and look at conversion data inside Ads Manager.
Use instead: BetterGate server-side Facebook Conversions API plus client pixel (iOS 14 resilient, unlike ToneDen).
- 4
Ad campaign automation
What it did: A guided flow that built Facebook and Instagram ad sets pointed at your ToneDen smart link, including basic audience suggestions.
Use instead: Run ads natively in Meta Ads Manager and point them at a BetterGate smart link. More control, fewer surprise charges.
- 5
Spotify pre-save campaigns
What it did: A pre-release page that collected Spotify pre-saves and Apple Music adds before drop day, then converted at release time.
Use instead: BetterGate pre-save smart links plus a release-day redirect rule. No paid tier required.
Direct ToneDen replacements
There is no perfect one-to-one swap. ToneDen was unusually broad. The four tools below cover the same ground when you mix and match them, and one of them is free.
1. BetterGate
FreeBest for: Smart links plus download unlock gates plus server-side Facebook CAPI, Google Measurement Protocol, and TikTok Events API in one dashboard. The only free tool that covers all four.
Watch out: Newer brand than Linkfire, so fewer label case studies to point at when you are pitching a marketing budget.

Free tier + paidBest for: Battle-tested with DJs and electronic producers for download-to-follow gates. Good Hypeddit Charts exposure for dance music.
Watch out: Limited free tier, no native server-side conversion API, and the smart link layout is less customisable than BetterGate or Linkfire.

Paid (from ~$10/mo)Best for: Polished smart links, label-grade analytics, and strong integrations with major distributors. Comfortable choice for labels and managers.
Watch out: Smart links only. No download gates, no pre-save campaigns on the lower tiers, and the pricing climbs quickly once you add team seats or extra pixels.

Paid (from ~$9/mo)Best for: Action pages, pre-saves, and good ad pixel support including Facebook CAPI. Designed around campaign workflows rather than single links.
Watch out: No free plan, no download unlock gate, and the cheapest tier caps how many active links you can keep live.
Read the full Feature.fm breakdownShort version: if budget is tight, start with BetterGate. If you only need smart links and your label is paying, Linkfire is the safer political choice. If you live in download gates for DJ pools and producer communities, keep Hypeddit on the bench. Feature.fm is the right pick when your workflow is campaign-first rather than link-first.
Migration plan: from ToneDen to a working stack in an afternoon
Treat this like a checklist. None of the steps are hard. The risk is missing one and leaving a broken link in an active ad set.
1. Inventory every ToneDen URL you still have in the wild
Search your Instagram bio, link tree, YouTube descriptions, TikTok bios, email signature, active Meta ad sets, Google Ads, scheduled Buffer or Later posts, press kits, and any flyers or release artwork. Put them all in a spreadsheet with two columns: old URL, new URL.
2. Pick one replacement and create an account
If you do not know which one yet, the safe default is BetterGate: free, smart links plus gates plus pixel tracking in one place. You can always layer a paid tool on top later. Do not split your stack on day one.
3. Recreate your most-trafficked links first
Sort the spreadsheet by traffic value. The Instagram bio link goes first, then any active ad sets, then the top three YouTube descriptions. Each smart link takes under a minute on BetterGate because pasting one Spotify URL auto-fetches Apple Music, YouTube Music, Deezer, Tidal, SoundCloud, and Amazon.
4. Recreate your download gates with their original action list
If your old gate required a Spotify follow plus an email signup, set the new one up the same way. Re-upload the file (BetterGate stores it in Cloudflare R2, presigned per download). Use the same slug if you can, so any cached links in Discord servers or Reddit threads still resolve.
5. Wire up your pixels and conversion APIs before you swap the URLs
This is the easy step to skip and the painful one to fix later. See the next section for the exact setup.
6. Swap the URLs everywhere the spreadsheet says to
Edit Instagram bio, update active ad sets in Meta Ads Manager, edit YouTube descriptions, replace links in scheduled posts. Tick the spreadsheet as you go. The goal is zero dead links pointing at toneden.io.
7. Watch the first 48 hours, then archive the spreadsheet
Open your new analytics dashboard daily for the first two days. Confirm clicks are landing, pixel events are firing, and downloads are completing. Once that is stable, the migration is done. Park the spreadsheet somewhere you can find it for the next platform change five years from now.
Pixel tracking after ToneDen: rebuild Facebook Pixel and Conversions API
The single biggest hidden loss from a ToneDen shutdown is your conversion data. The smart link being dead is visible. The pixel data quietly disappearing from your retargeting audiences is not. If you do not rebuild this layer, your next ad campaign optimises against a much smaller, much worse audience than it should.
ToneDen ran a per-link Facebook Pixel only. That was fine before iOS 14, but Apple App Tracking Transparency broke pixel-only setups for a meaningful slice of mobile traffic. The fix is to fire conversions twice: once client-side via the pixel for speed and dedup, and once server-side via Facebook Conversions API so iOS users still count. On BetterGate this is built in. You paste your Pixel ID and your CAPI access token, choose which events count as conversions (typically PageView, Lead for email captures, and CompleteRegistration for downloads), and BetterGate sends both signals with matching event IDs so Meta dedups them.
The same pattern applies for Google Ads and TikTok. BetterGate ships server-side Google Measurement Protocol and TikTok Events API alongside the client tags, so a single gate or smart link can feed three ad networks at once without any custom code. If you were paying ToneDen for ad automation, you can run leaner ads now: hand over good signal to each network and let their algorithms do the optimising. That is what they are actually good at.
A pragmatic rebuild order: PageView first (so retargeting audiences start filling again the moment you swap URLs), then the conversion event you actually care about (Lead for email captures, Purchase or CompleteRegistration for download unlocks), then a custom event for any high-intent click like "clicked Spotify". Set up the matching events in Meta Events Manager before you flip the ad set, not after.
Frequently asked questions
When did ToneDen shut down?
During 2024. The wind-down happened in stages: free accounts lost access first, paid dashboards went read-only, and by the end of the year the smart link URLs stopped resolving entirely.
Can I export my historical ToneDen data?
In most cases, no. The dashboard is no longer accessible and there is no official export API. If you logged into your ToneDen account before it went dark you may have screenshots, but otherwise the historical campaign data is gone. Going forward, choose a replacement that lets you download CSV exports of your own analytics.
Will my old smart link URLs ever work again?
No. Plan for them to stay dead. The fastest fix is to recreate every active link on a new platform and update wherever the old URL appears. If you used a custom domain on ToneDen, you may be able to repoint that domain at your new platform so embedded links keep working.
Is BetterGate actually free or is there a hidden paywall?
Free. The core tools (smart links, download unlock gates, Spotify pre-save, server-side Facebook CAPI, Google Measurement Protocol, TikTok Events API) are all on the free plan with no per-link limit and no forced branding upgrade.
Do I need to redo my ads after migrating?
You do not need to redo the creative, but you should edit any active ad set so the destination URL points at the new platform. Then update the Meta Events Manager mapping to the new conversion event. Pixel and CAPI rebuild takes minutes, not days.
